Coal & Underground Coal Gasification

Alaska Earth Sciences provides project management, logistics and geologic support to exploration for coal and underground coal gasification (UCG) resources throughout the state of Alaska.  Mike Belowich, one of the most knowledgeable coal geologists in Alaska, brings to the field 29 years of experience in surface and underground coal mine exploration, UCG exploration, coal bed methane exploration, and permitting.

In particular, Alaska Earth Sciences has been working for years to develop the coal resources of the Wishbone Hill District in Jonesville and Sutton.   With a Coal Resource Office in Wasilla, AES has provided technical resources and management for numerous projects in the Matanuska Valley.

In addition, we have played a leading role in helping Cook Inlet Regional Corporation define the coal and UCG resources of its lands in the Beluga Field.

“Alaska is at a critical juncture. Several major mines are now in production and the State is realizing more mining jobs and revenues than ever before. We can – and must – demonstrate that exploration and mining of coal and minerals is good for rural villages, the state’s economy, and compatible with a clean and healthy environment.” Rob Retherford, President
